Computer Glasses

Computer glasses are single vision lenses that make it easier for the eyes to focus on a computer screen. Computer monitors are usually positioned between 20 and 26 inches from your eyes, which is too close to be corrected with distance lenses and too far away to be corrected with reading glasses. Computer glasses, however, offer just the right lens magnification to reduce the amount of effort needed for the eyes to focus on the screen.

What computer glasses treat

Computer glasses are used to treat Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), a condition that results from prolonged computer use. Symptoms of CVS include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Eye strain
  • Dry eyes
  • Sore or irritated eyes
  • Headaches

Since there is not as much contrast between the letters and the background on a computer as there is on a printed page, the eye muscles must work harder to focus and need to constantly adjust. However, computer glasses improve your intermediate vision and make it easier for the eyes to focus on the screen without squinting.

Benefits of computer glasses

Computer glasses can be beneficial for individuals of all ages who use the computer for extended periods of time. Not only do computer glasses treat the symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome by improving your ability to focus at an intermediate distance, but they also allow you to sit comfortably and maintain good posture while at the computer, which reduces neck and back strain.

Problems associated with computer glasses

Individuals who wear computer glasses for their intended use at the computer do not usually experience any problems. However, it is important to remember that computer glasses are meant for improving vision at intermediate distances and should not be used in place of corrective lenses for reading or distance. Individuals may experience eye strain and headaches if they wear computer glasses to look at objects up close or far in the distance.

If you spend an extended amount of time using a computer and are experiencing symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome such as eye strain or headaches, you may benefit from computer glasses. Consult your optometrist to find out if computer glasses are right for you.
